In 1925, a young sailor from LHO 'Seumawe in Acheh by the name of Teuku Nyak Puteh fixed in Penang to marry a quiet girl from Butterworth, Che Mah Hussein. If the modest couple began a new life in a village, it is unlikely they could in their wildest dreams have imagined that they would have son who would be a legend @ Melayu Boleh.
P. Ramlee was Melayu Boleh : an icon whose stature was about the continent, the most consummate artist - actor, director, singer, composer, narrator - Malaysia has seen or is ever likely.
P. Ramlee also crooned over 250 original songs - including tunes now immortal classics as Bunyi Guitar, Malam ku Bermimpi, Jeritan Batinku and very melodic Jangan Tinggal Daku.
P. Ramlee films, popularly called repeatedly on television ever since have become household names closely and adored by a wide cross-section of Malaysian society.
In 1957 this Melayu Boleh talented men received the best male actor for Anakku Sazali at the Asian Film Festival in Tokyo. In 1959, his Pendekar Bujang Lapok won the best comedy on the same festival held in Kuala Lumpur and in 1963 he received a special award as Asia's most versatile talent for his performance in Ibu Mertuaku.
P. Ramlee in his series of awards is enormous. Even the Malaysian army offered these Melayu Boleh talented men's title 'Sergeant Titular' for his performance in the film Sergeant Hassan! The King of Malaysia that his posthumous honorary title Tan Sri in 1990.
Today, still swaying coconut trees near P.Ramlee's birthplace and children in the surrounding village can be heard on the game, just like centuries ago.
