MALAYSIA relinquished the overall champion title and finished fifth behind Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines in the Vietnam Sea Games held in December.

Malaysia’
s medal haul of 44 gold, 42 silver and 59 bronze medals fell short of the 48-gold target set by the National Sports Council. Nevertheless, there were plenty of bright spots for the nation, as gymnastics, aquatics and surprisingly, athletics, brought the biggest cheers to the Malaysian camp by contributing 26 gold medals – eight more than the other 24 sports combined.
